As colder weather settles in across the country, we want to share a helpful seasonal reminder for our wholesale partners. Each year, once temperatures begin to drop, some customers notice that their olive oil arrives cloudier, thicker, or even partially frozen. While it can be surprising, this is a completely natural reaction to cold temperatures during transit.
Why This Happens
Olive oil contains small amounts of natural fats and waxes. When exposed to cold conditions, these components begin to solidify, creating a cloudy appearance or visible clumps and swirls. In very low temperatures, the oil may even appear slushy or fully frozen.
Although the appearance may raise questions, this is a normal and harmless process. Cold temperatures do not damage the oil or affect its quality or flavor.
What To Do If Your Product Arrives Chilled or Frozen
If your shipment arrives looking cloudy or thick, simply allow the oil to warm back up gradually. We recommend storing it at room temperature—preferably above 75°F—until it returns to a clear liquid state.
Depending on your climate and the size of the containers, this process may take anywhere from several hours to a couple of days. Once fully thawed and clear, the olive oil will perform exactly as intended.
No Impact on Quality
We want to reassure you that temperature-related cloudiness does not indicate spoilage or contamination. It’s simply part of the natural behavior of authentic olive oil in colder months.
